VRD’s Failure to Protect Malta’s Chickens: A Systemic Issue

Once again, the Veterinary and Regulatory Directorate (VRD) has failed to protect Malta’s animals. Despite the 2023 Newcastle Disease outbreak in Europe, VRD did nothing to address the growing population of stray chickens across the island, many of which were abandoned by irresponsible owners.
These animals are victims of neglect, and VRD’s decision to cull them on a large scale is a clear prioritisation of profit-driven interests over the welfare of the animals. This is not just a failure of protection but a betrayal of the animals who have been left to suffer.
As VRD is now being moved under the Food Safety Authority, we fear that animal welfare will be further sidelined in favour of industry priorities. This situation underlines the urgent need for stronger protections for animals in Malta, ensuring that their welfare is at the forefront, not exploited for profit.
